Thanksgiving is around the corner so I thought I would try to make a cornucopia for the centerpiece on my Thanksgiving table. What you need to have are corn husks, a little bit of twine, some garden gloves, your tools, and chicken wire. Now corn husks come dry and they’re a little bit hard to manipulate, so what you do is soak them in the sink for about an hour and then when they’re nice and wet they’re very malleable and flexible and they’ll behave just nicely. So when you get your chicken wire, unroll it so that it is about arms length and then…woah…woah! It’s a rogue wire! Then what you want to do, take your snippers and cut the wire. Okay, so I’m going to put my gloves on and I’m going to start working with my chicken wire.
What we want to do is kind of roll this into a cone shape…hello! Geez louise, okay..alright..let’s do it this way. When you’re at this stage of it, it doesn’t have to be perfect because you’re actually going to cover up all of your transgressions with the corn husks. The biggest part at this stage is to make sure these wires are secured around each other so that they don’t pop open, because once you get the corn husks on there it’s really hard to get your hand in there and to get it all wired shut.
So that wasn’t the easiest thing in the world, but it didn’t take me much time. Actually, it took about ten minutes. Now we’re going to put our corn husks on. Again, they’ve been soaking in water. What you need to do is get your twine cut in several pieces because you’re going to put it underneath the cornucopia as you go. I am sticking the end of the corn husk into one of the chicken wire hexagons, and then I’m fanning them out. The twine goes on after. All in all, this should only take you about thirty minutes to do. Once you get the hang of it, you just go go go! Look how pretty this is looking…love, love, love! I hope you have a bountiful Thanksgiving.
